Über First Day of Spring:

[…] Stephan Beckers Erfolgsformel: offene Beats und klare Klavierlinien.“

About Urban Poems:

“… the sophisticated art of trio from ballads to up-tempo tunes. Becker & Co. love clear lines and an almost pop musical rhythmic drive.” (Stereoplay Ed.3/2013)

„ … the trio appears compact with unerring instincts, – from the funky piece “Mondance” to the delicately airy “Simplicity” – with the result that the new album sounds even more homogeneous than the last.”(Jazzthing, February/ March 2013)

Stephan Becker does not yet play in the World League. That does not have to stay that way. Becker’s new and third album draws sustaining attention to a young and bold artist. …with great music … from the ‚Album of the Week .“(NDR – public radio station) .  .

About First Day of Spring:

“The music comes along in a poetic manner and with innovative song ideas .It has a romantic streak, but can also be very groovy.” (Fono Forum, May 2011)

„With a keen sense of sound, a feeling for the cantability and pictorial song titles he arouses films in the listener’s head, ….“  (Stereo, May 2011)

Reinhard Köchl writes in the magazine JazzThing (Ed. 88/ April/May 2011) of a “personal handwriting of their interplay, in which modern grooves and smaller „electronic“ gimmicks are organically inserted in the homogeneous sound”. Their intention is not to permanently act out tricks, but to tell the most interesting, moving stories in notes. […] Of course, Stephan Becker’s [classical] roots are hard to deny in view of this impulsively, enthusiastically manner of performing. […] Free ride for an unconventional piano trio”.

The magazine Stereoplay (84/2011) featured the CD “First Day of Spring” as a “sound tip”. It states: “A talented piano voice from Germany can be discovered here. The Cologne Stephan Becker improvises ballads and up-tempo tunes with a feeling for catchy melodies. […]Stephan Becker’s formula for success: open beats and clear piano lines.“
